30: Chester Kiwanis: Meeting, Board Meeting - Our guest speaker was Martha Casey who is an agent for Ingram and Associates. Martha presented The Truth Project, an in-depth Christian Worldview Experience. The Truth Project is a DVD-based small group curriculum comprised of 12 one-hour lessons taught by Dr. Del Tackett. This home study is the starting point for looking at life from a biblical perspective. Each lesson discusses in great detail the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life. Our club's Installation of Officers Banquet Dinner will be held on Monday September 27 at 6:00 PM at the Holiday Inn South Park. Please RSVP to Joan Benton to let her know if you (and your spouse) will be in attendance. Club president Gary Burleigh welcomed our newest members Kathleen J. Wiltsie and Brian J. White.
23: Chester Kiwanis: In lieu of a regular meeting night, many members of the Kiwanis Club of Chester participated in the Chester YMCA Bright Beginnings program where they met a Target to help children pick out clothes for the start of school. Each member had one child to help pick out a pair of shoes, and several pairs of pants and shirts, a dress (if the child was a girl), a bag of underwear, a bag of socks and a sweatshirt or jacket. The club thanks Tom Sokol our community service chair for arranging for the club to particapate in this event.
23: Chester YMCA Bright Beginnings: Tom Sokol is looking for additional volunteers to help out with the Chester YMCA Bright Beginnings program from 5:30 - 8:30 PM on Monday August 23 at Target. Volunteers will help students pick out school supplies. Please contact Tom for details.

Sandra and her husband Adam work together at their office located at 4700 Buckingham Court across from Dr. Joe. Sandra has received numerous awards in her profession over her 20 year career. Sandra highlighted some of the chemical, physical and emotional elements that are conducive to good health and wellness. Sandra informed us how important it is to eat regular meals and to supplement with daily doses of fish oil, Ultrameal and meditation. Also, we need to stay away from many artificial sweeteners and food that contains partially hydrogenated soybean oil. Chiropractic is the largest and most popular natural, drug-free healthcare system in the world. Chiropractors perform a service to locate and release stress from the body, a stress that affects the brain and spinal cord. DGI was started in 1964 by Harry Moody as a manufacturer of chalkboards for classrooms. Handed down from father to son, DGI has evolved into a full-line furnishings supplier to education, municipal and government facilities throughout the state of Virginia. Tam described many humorous stories of how he got started working for his father at the first facility which is now the Chester Muffler Shop. While Tam's father was strict and quite a character, Tam learned the business and expanded its operations to supply numerous prestigious facilities. 04: Independence Day05: Chester Kiwanis: Meeting, Board Meeting. If not, Board meeting will be held on July 6. 28: Chester Kiwanis: Meeting, Program: The club was again privileged to have Vickie Griffith of BreakThrough as our guest speaker. Vickie is a business owner, speaker, certified hypnotist, master energy therapist, licensed science of mind practitioner at BreakThrough, as well as a professional speaker and teacher. Vickie's presentation was entitled "Secrets of Money Magnets". Secrets of Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Albert Einstein, & Oprah understand about attracting money, creativity, and joy to your life. Vickie recommended that we consider reading "The Biology of Belief: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter, & Miracles" by Bruce H. Lipton and "Molecules Of Emotion: The Science Behind Mind-Body Medicine" by Candace B. Pert. Vickie's technique includes simple to do steps that have proven to work. Wayne gave a slide show of his vacation to Ireland that he and his wife Ann took in 2004. We took a virtual vacation tour of the Cliffs of Moher, Kilkenny Castle, the Passage Mounds and Blarney Castle to name a few of his vacation stops. 14: Flag Day12: James River Cleanup. In honor of Kiwanis One Day, the Kiwanis Club of Chester had six members including Marshall Henry, Wayne Stuart, Hank Dvorak, Joan Benton, Dixon Handwerk and Rick Dodson help clean up the James River near Dutch Gap. Also, four members from the Thomas Dale High School Key Club participated as well and one Mom and Dad. 12: Division Council Meeting at Southern States. Contact Bob Cassada for details. 11: Special Olympics: We will have an opportunity to help with Special Olympics at the University of Richmond campus. Details are incomplete at thsi time, but activities will inclued cheering for, coaching, and helping the special athletes particpate in the summer games. More details will be provided when received from the Special Olympics staff. Please contact Tom Sokol to sign up. 08: Chester Kiwanis Concert on the Green featuring the Fort Lee Army Band was held on Tuesday June 8th at the Chester Village Green. For the eighth year, the Fort Lee 392 Army Band again graced the Chester community with a free concert. Approximately 300 gathered to listen to the music, thank our military for their service, to enjoy lemonade and the pleasant weather. This event was proudly co-sponsored by the Village News and the Kiwanis Club of Chester to thank our community for their ongoing support. 31: Chester Kiwanis: No Meeting in lieu of Memorial Day 31: Memorial Day 24: Chester Kiwanis: Meeting, Program: We had the distinct pleasure to hear from Doc Thompson of WRVA on monday night. Doc has an obvious love for our country and concerns about our direction concerning illegal aliens, excessive spending, etc. He believes that many of our economic and crime problems stem from illegals, and that it is breaking the state's budgets. His passion gets folks involved in the political process and wakes us up as well. Capitalism works, it has created unprecedented wealth in the world, our economy in particular, for the last 200 plus years and will continue to work if we can keep the socialism at bay.

On board night, club president Gary Burleigh presented the Kiwanis Children's Fund Sustaining Donor Award to Tom Sokol, our club's community services chair. This award is for supporting the Kiwanis International Foundation with exemplary generosity. Danny Wyatt and Marshall Henry announced that the Concert on the Green featuring the US Army 392nd band will take place on June 8. Joan Benton announced that the Fall Festival is progressing according to plan and will take place at the Chester Village Green on Wednesday September 15 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Bob Cassada announced that there will be a division council meeting at our club location at 6:30 PM on May 20 and a second session on June 12 at Southern States. Click Here for Details. 26: Chester Kiwanis: Meeting, Program: Our guest speaker was Ralph Carter of GOOOH (Get Out Of Our House) and the Chester Patriots. GOOOH - Pronounced "GO" is a plan to remove all members of the U.S. House of Representatives and replace them with everyday Americans. GOOOH was first founded in 2007 by Tim Cox from Texas. GOOOH is looking to amass 500,000 members who each contribute $100 that would generate $50 million to begin a national campaign to replace career politicians. The next club meeting will be a board meeting and annual election of officers. Tom Sokol, our community services chair is working on a event to be held on June 11 for the Special Olympics Torch Lighting Cerimony to be held at the University of Richmond. 24: Arbor Day24: Friends of Pocahontas. Help to improve Pocahontas State Park. Work will start at 1:00 PM. We will be working from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM doing trail work, dam maintenence and building fences. Barb was RN for 29 years and specialized in oncology at MCV. Barb is now an Independent Nikken Consultant. She gave a presentation entitled "Bone Health, The Truth About Your Skeletal System." Barb described the role of the skeletal system, how bones function, adverse effects of drugs, bio-replenishments and current research. Since our minerals are stored in our bones and bone marrow manufactures blood cells, some of us learned that our bones do more than hold our body in place. Statistics show that more than 10 million Americans have osteoporosis, 34 million have low bone mass, and 60 million have joint related issues. Age no longer seems to be the sole contributing factors for these bone related problems. Diets have changed in modern times with people consuming more acidic foods including soda, caffeine and alcohol drawing calcium from the bones to neutralize the acids. Calcium supplements are not well absorbed into the bones and may cause other issues. Osteo-drugs may help reduce bone loss, but not help the natural process of bone deterioration and replenishment. 17: 5th Annual Pocahontas Little-Big Adventure Contact Noelle Grosso if you would like to volunteer. The Kiwanis Club of Chester and the Thomas Dale High School Key Club assisted sponsor Running Kids for the Little Big Adventure held at Pochantas Park from 09:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The event was a triatholon for a parent and child. The teams would compete by paddling a canoe over a measured course before transitioning to a bike ride over a measured course and finishing with a race. Members of the Thomas Dale Key Club were a big help in staging the canoes for the eight individual heats. Click Here to view photos from this event. Danny04: Kiwanis One Day 02: Good Friday01: April Fool's Day 30: Passover29: Chester Kiwanis: Meeting, Program: Our guest speaker Mark Fausz, Editor of the Village News, member of the Chester Community Association and Chester Summit committee. Mark and his wife Linda (Publisher) have been with the Village News since 1998. Although Mark's background was in home construction and cabinet making, he made the transition to Village News editor look easy. As most of us know, the Village news is the premier newspaper covering our area. Mark presented some of the current activities taken on by the Chester Community Association. This includes bringing focus to the Federal government's High Speed Rail project. The association has invited members of the High Speed Rail initiative to Chester on May 22 to discuss issues such as the eight to twelve foot fence to be constructed adjacent to the railroad tracks and to learn more. In advance of this effort, Mark recently visited the old Chester Hotel (Kiwanis Historical Park) site where there is an archaeology dig where he witnessed the uncovering of a 3 1/2 inch arrow head and surrounding chips. The Chester Community Association has set up a Chester Summit meeting on April 29 at 7:00 PM at the Chester Center for the Arts Office. This will be a brainstorming meeting with local civic organization in hopes of establishing a community calendar, improving communications and planning of events. Dixon Handwerk announce that we will have an auction of donated items at our regular meeting on April 12. Please bring in your items over the next two meetings. We will meet at Dunkin Donuts at 7:30 AM for coffee and doughnuts. Locatioin assignments (usining Rick Dodson's maps) will be made and work will begin by 7:50 AM. Community Services chairman Tom Sokol rounded up a large group of Chester Kiwanians (members shown here - Joe Hillier and Tom Williams participated, but are not in photo) and members of the Circle K Club to clean up the roadside in Chester. This was certainly a record turnout for a highway clean-up project, and we are proud of Tom's efforts and for the free coffee and donuts. Also, a special thanks goes to Allen Shore for inviting his Circle K member to participate. 24: Portfolio Career Day at Bryant Stratton College. If you would like to help out with mock student interviews, please contact Allen Shore for details. 22: Chester Kiwanis: Meeting, Program: The guest speaker was Randy Atkinson, Director of Group Sales for the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Randy joined the organization recently and is in his eight year in minor league baseball. He previously worked with the Delmarva Shorebirds for seven seasons as an intern and Director of Ticket Operations. The Delmarva Shorebirds are a member of the South Atlantic League's Northern Division, a Single A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Randy received his degree in business Management from York College of Pennsylvania. His hometown is Kimberton, PA and he is a fan of all Philadelphia teams, following the Phillies and Eagles the closest. Randy's favorite thing about Richmond thus far, is how much it keeps surprising him because there is something fun to do in every part of town. Randy is excited about helping to bring baseball back to Richmond and shared many, if not all of the, promotional ideas and events that will be offered this year. He was very enthusiastic and that carried over to all attendees. We had a five person inter-club with the Kiwanis Club of Richmond this evening. Our inter-club chairperson Kris Der wants to reciprocate with the Richmond club on Monday, April 5th at 11:45 a.m at the Virginia Historical Society. (She sent out email recently to all members). Click Here to view photos of this event. 15: Chester Kiwanis: Meeting, Program: Our guest speaker was Chip Houston a US Marine veteran who works with the Families of the Wounded Fund. Chip lives in Woodland Pond and we are fortunate to be the first Kiwanis Club to hear his presentation. The organization began informally in 2005 and working largely through word of mouth, the Families of the Wounded Fund has raised more than $2,000,000 and has helped more than 300 families so far. The organization helps the wounded service men families in need with lodging, meals, transportation, health and child care, phone service and other costs that pile up while family members and caregivers attend to their loved ones far from home. We are fortunate to have McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond which is on of four in the US that specializes in head and spinal cord injuries. For the second year in a row, David Elswick had again challenged the Key Club at Thomas Dale High School to work with a NYOF charity that helps children in Nepal go to school instead of working to support their families. David Elswick matched the donation by the Key Club and several Kiwanis Club of Chester members. Inter-club chairperson Kris Der has arranged for an inter-club meeting with the Kiwanis Club of Richmond at the Virginia Historical Society on April 5. Ed Thompson has Ducky Derby tickets now on sale - $5.00 per ticket or 3 for $10.00. Cash prizes will be drawn at the Capital District Convention in Lynchburg in August. President Gary Burleigh announced that Steve Miles be taking over the position of Heart of Virginia Trustee for the remaining term previously held by Jim O'Connell. The fundraising committee is pleased to announce that we have volunteers to lead each of our 2010 fundraising events as follows: Raffle: Danny Wyatt, Fall Festival: Joan Benton, ChesterFest: David Elswick, Christmas Parade Party: Rick Dodson 14: Daylight Savings Begins - Spring Forward 13: The HOV Midwinter Training and Elections has been rescheduled to Saturday March 13th at same place and same time. There is one major change. Instead of three training sessions it will be two sessions in the morning, followed by lunch after which the Trustee election will occur. Following Trustee election the assembled body will break into Div 4 and Div 18 for Divisional Council meetings and LTG elections. Please mark your calendars and be register if you and your club have not registered. Those who have already registered once the final sessions are decided upon, you will be notified that you can change your selections. Details: Phil Cunningham, 748-6556 or Paul Brown, 732-2706. 24: TDHS Key Club - old auditorium at Thomas Dale High School at 6:30 p.m.- see Kris Derr for details. 22: Chester Kiwanis: Meeting, Program: Guest speakers were Kevin Bacon, his dad Harris Bacon and Tom Hoof. Harris and Tom are civilian members, two of 28, that are charged with providing administrative oversight for Crime Solvers. Harris has been President twice and Tom Hoof four times. Crime Solvers was created to overcome the two main problems which prevent law enforcement from obtaining information about crimes from citizens. Fear and apathy. Crime Solvers mission is to provide an anonymous means to the public for reporting information to the police about crime. The citizens can provide tips without disclosing their names. Tips are provided to two full time Police Coordinators who are responsible for the day to day operation of Crime Solvers. Tips do not come through the law enforcement channel. Rewards, which are approved by the civilian member board, are paid for tips that lead to an arrest. In this day and age, telephone calls are only ones means of receiving tips. Text-a-tip and web site tips are very popular. Crime Solvers has a speakers bureau and can provide a speaker for any event. Contact (804) 748-1278. 17: Ash Wednesday16: Mardi Gras15: Chester Kiwanis: Meeting, Program: Nicole Jordan and Beth Jaeckle introduced the 2009-2010 Thomas Dale High School Keyette Club Officers. Each of the officers presented a summary of their projects and activities for the semester. The keyette club logged 1,500 hours of community service for the semester. This included projects such as the YMCA Kids Night Out, Fall Festival and Light Up the Night. The club helps out with many activities at Bon Secours Nursing Home, tutoring, ChesterFest, canned food drive for Christmas Mother, and making blankets for the Jackson-Feild Home for Girls. Governor Bob Cassada - Due to the expected snow the HOV Mid-winter Training and Election is being postponed. As soon as the committee can agree on a new date we will get that information to the clubs. The committee realizes that this will create a hardship for many of you as your schedules are full of activities, especially on a Saturday. Stay safe and warm. 30: Regional Midwinter Conference. This is a one day conference at JSRCC is a separate event from the DISTRICT Midwinter conference in Arlington. Attendance at both events is encouraged, as both offer excellent, although distinctly different opportunities for learning and fellowship. 25: Chester Kiwanis: Meeting, Program: Ed Montgomery who will speak about CaringBridge, Connecting Family and Friends When Health Matters Most. We were pleased to have Ed Montgomery as our guest speaker. By trade, Ed has been a handyman and licensed commercial builder. A couple years ago, Ed's dentist advised him to see a specialist concerning swelling of his lymph nodes on his neck. Ed went on to discover that he had throat cancer. Ed described his ordeals with having his cancer treated through recent advancements in treating cancer. Ed went under chemo therapy and suffered many side-effects including loss of hair, loss of taste, trouble with salivary glands, trouble swallowing, weight loss, and other sicknesses. Ed showed the brass and silver filters used during radiation therapy where he underwent eight weeks of treatments. During this time, Ed became aware of caringbridge.org where he developed a web site to stay in touch with his family and friends. As many have found with serious illnesses, family and friends may be hesitate to communicate often as not to disturb the patient. Though the use of the CaringBridge web technology, patients have an easier time staying in communication and relaying progress and soliciting support. Broad in Hopewell. Tickets $5.00. 21: 95th Anniversary of Kiwanis International 18: Chester Kiwanis: Meeting, Program: Our guest speakers were Kathy Jentgen, Executive Director of the Chester YMCA and Mary Jo Dodson, Board of Management Chair for the Chester YMCA. Kathy has been with the Chester YMCA for six years, with prior experience with the YMCA in Ohio. Kathy has been married for 36 years and has two grown children and two grandsons. The YMCA serves 150,000 people in the greater Richmond area. The YMCA is the largest provider of child care services in our nation. The YMCA's Bright Beginnings program provides children in need with such items as clothing, pens, paper and pencils. The Marquerite Fun Club serves 25 children from section 8 housing development. This year, the YMCA was pleased to induct 32 children in their Leaders Club volunteer program to read to patients at Lucy Corr Nursing Home. The YMCA would like to add on to their facility as they continue to grow, including a family friendly pool and teen center. David Elswick displayed Kiwanis Club Promotional Material developed in conjunction with Rick Dodson. 18: Martin Luther King Jr. Day11: Chester Kiwanis: Meeting, Our speaker was Kiwanis Club of Chester member Bill Fox. Bill provided us with techniques on how to use a digital camera when taking pictures for sporting events. Bill explained the need to adjust camera settings for proper shutter speed and ISO to have brighter pictures that are nut blurred. We were pleased to host two inter-club meetings with both the Richmond and Colonial Heights Kiwanis Clubs. President Gary Burleigh announced that the Hopewell Kiwanis Club will be having a pancake supper this Saturday January 23 from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM at the Masonic Lodge on West Broad Street in Hopewell. Tom Williams has asked that anyone interest in being a member of the Fund Raising Committee to contact him as soon as possible. Please note that the Kiwanis International Board directed the staff to prepare a change that will be effective April 1, 2010 if the Board approves it at its meeting next week in Indianapolis. Tom Varner spoke with Ellis and he said that as far as he knew the vote is just a formality as it was the Board that directed it to take place. Everyone expects it to be approved by the Board. There are two situations: Until March 30, 2010, all new members will pay a $50 new member fee. Members joining April 1, 2010 and thereafter will pay the prorated annual dues fee; the new member fee will be discontinued. The proration is as follows for US clubs.
