FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 23, 2008 Contact: David Elswick © 239-8257, email link KIWANIS CLUB OF CHESTER’S HARD TIMES FALL FESTIVAL HELD AT CHESTER’S VILLAGE GREEN (October 23, 2008) – The Kiwanis Club of Chester hosted a new fall festival on Wednesday, October 15th, at the Village Green on Rt 10 in Chester. The event ran from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. “This event was in response to our economic hard times and our desire to give our community the opportunity to attend a great event that was inexpensive, centrally located, and fun,” David Elswick, the Kiwanis Club of Chester’s Publicity Chairman said. “Members of the club started planning back in July to develop an event that a family could afford to attend. Club members did most of the work to keep costs down. And several local businesses provided their goods and services, either free or with a substantial discount. Similar events often cost as much as $30 per person to attend,” Elswick said. “But our most expensive ticket was $10 for adults.’ Local businessman Dickie King, of King’s Barbeque, was on site most of the day to advise the Kiwanis members on food preparation based upon his years of experience in the catering business. Other local businesses that contributed to the success was Flagstop Car Wash & Quick Lube, Heritage Chevrolet, and Uno Chicago Grill. The ticket covered the cost of “all-you can eat” hot dogs, corn muffins, chili, and soft drinks. Also included in the cost of an adult ticket were 2 adult beverages. Music was provided by Spectrum. This former house band at the Richmond Hyatt has performed at over 1500 shows since 1985. Spectrum is a 10-piece variety band which features male and female vocals and a powerful 4-piece horn section to accurately re-create the authentic sounds of the jazz-pop styles from the last 60 years. Door prizes were drawn from the meal tickets of the attendees. Prizes included $100 gas coupons, $100 grocery coupons, and a Grand Prize of a Royal Caribbean “Two Day Cruise To Nowhere” out of Norfolk. “Guests were still entering the festival as late as 7:30 p.m. And over 800 people attended the event. We want to thank the community for its support of this festival. Because of the community’s help, the Kiwanis Club of Chester is able to support projects benefiting the youth of Chester.” Elswick said. “The proceeds from this festival will be used to fund college scholarships for a student at each of the following: John Tyler Community College and the high schools of Thomas Dale, L. C. Bird, and the Community High School. Interested students should contact their high school counselors or view this web site for further details. ___________________________________________________________
