Noelle Grosso

ABOVE: Noelle Grosso led the club in a workshop that led to learning more about our fellow members.  Each present member interviewed a fellow member concerning their spouse, children/grandchildren, hobbies, funniest thing that ever happened, something that no one knows, craziest thing ever done, most interesting place ever been, and their best Kiwanis memory.

BELOW: This week is the Thomas Dale High School Key Club "YMCA Work Week".  For the past seven or eight years,  this has been an early project for the TDHS Key Club.  Typically, six to eight members come each day to work from 9:00 AM until noon to do whatever cleanup and maintenance that the YMCA needs.

Meeting Highlights  - August 11, 2008
Mark James of the Growth Coach of Richmond. Click to enlarge.
Mark James

Our guest speaker was Mark James who works with Connie Maier for the The Growth Coach of Richmond.  This was an interactive presentation on a "long-term vision for our Businesses and our personal lives by unlocking the wisdom within us".  The Growth Coach provides a unique, proven, strategic-focusing process that is designed for professionals who have the desire to drive greater success while maintaining a healthy balance in their lives.  Clients are taught how to work smarter, not harder.  In the end, the clients can earn more money, work less, and enjoy enriched lives.

A free seminar will be held on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 from 1:00 - 3:00 PM at 5101 Monument Ave in Richmond.  Call 804-601-2482 or click here to send an email for registration.

Meeting Highlights  - August 4, 2008

This was a board meeting night and there was no guest speaker, but we were fortunate to have three guests Earl, Chris and former member Holly Flores.  Since President-Elect Holly Flores recently had to leave our club to relocate with her family to Colorado, Dixon Handwerk was voted by the board for this position.  Joan Benton was voted to be our Vice President and Debbie Lee was voted as a board member for the 2008-2010 term.

David Elswick was named to chair our BACKPACK committee.  If you wish donate to provide backpacks to girls schools in Iraq, please give your check to Secretary Bob written out to the Kiwanis Club of Chester Foundation.  Funds will then be transferred to the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg who is coordinating this activity for the Capital District.

Please let Secretary Joe know which committee you would like to serve for the upcoming Hard Times Fall Festival to be held on October 15 at the Chester Village Green.

The club wishes to thank Basil Furr for his fine job this year with the Young Children Priority One project.  Click Here to read the Chester Village News article concerning this reading program.

Rick Dodson is leading the effort for the Kiwanis Club of Chester who is again contributing $1,000 to sponsor a gurney in the Anthem Gurney Tourney which will return to Downtown Richmond Saturday, September 13, 2008. This is the 10th anniversary of this event, and the race will be held at 7th and Marshall Streets.

Once again the event will feature a Family Fun Festival. Activities for all ages including a Kids entertainment, live music and family health fair screenings will be available. Come join the fun in Festival Park adjacent to the Richmond Coliseum.  The Anthem Gurney Tourney is a joint effort by the Hospital Hospitality House and the MCV Auxiliary. Each year proceeds from the event are divided equally between the House and a program at MCV Hospital chosen by the MCV Hospital Auxiliary.  To date, more than $952,000 has been raised from this event to support the Hospital Hospitality House and VCU’s Medical College of Virginia.

The Anthem Gurney Tourney is a great corporate team building activity. Richmond-area companies sponsor gurney teams who don costumes, outlandishly decorate gurneys and race them through an obstacle course competing not only for the best time but also for awards like most humorous and most original gurney.  For more information or if your company would like to participate, please call the Hospital Hospitality House at 804.828.6901.
